5 tips for a safe holiday weekend

As the temperatures rise and vacations beckon, Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) reminds Canadians to stay safe this holiday weekend and all summer with a few  easy-to-follow tips.

"As Canadians head out for cottage country, campgrounds and other vacation destinations there are a number of safety risks you could face. This is why it's important to review a few simple safety tips with your loved ones each year," said Lindsay Olson, Vice President, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba with IBC in a press release.

Here are some safety tips for ensuring your weekend is worry-free:

1) Whether you're on the road or in the boat, "don't booze and cruise"
2) Only adults (18 years or over) should handle fireworks. And don't handle them if you are impaired.
3) Avoid driver distractions. Distracted drivers can be just as impaired as drunk drivers.
4) Obey the rules of the road, respect posted speed limit, the rights of other drivers and drive according to road conditions.
5) When swimming be aware of your limitations. Don't go beyond your ability.

Consumers indicate fast claims processing is most valued when dealing with insurers

Canadian consumers identified fast claims processing as the most-valued feature when dealing with insurance companies, note new findings from InsurEye Inc.

To get a fix on what consumers value most in their insurance providers, the study analyzes 600-plus consumer reviews of home, auto and life insurance companies. The survey was conducted using InsurEye's online insurance consumer experience tool.
Fast claims processing topped the list at 23.9%, followed by fair treatment of claim (16%); professional and knowledgeable staff (15.5%); low/reasonable pricing (15.2%); easy to reach/quick to respond inquiries (11.5%); friendly/courteous service (11.5%); bundled offering/discounts (4.2%); and transparent/easy to understand (2.2%).

"Prompt and fair claims processing are key to consumer satisfaction," says Alexey Saltykov, CEO and co-founder of InsurEye, a company that provides consumers with reviews related to home auto and life insurance. "Unfortunately, most consumers don't know how their insurer will handle their claim until after having an accident."

FSCO warns of mail scam using Aviva Canada logo

The Financial Services Commission of Ontario (FSCO) is telling consumers to be on the alert for a mail scam that is using the Aviva Canada logo, address and name.
Designed to look like they have come from a law firm in Spain, the letters ask recipients to contact the author for more details. The letters are currently circulating with the promise of a large payout from an estate sharing the same last name as the addressee, FSCO reports in an advisory.
Aviva Canada has confirmed it has no connection to this proposal or any similar transactions, and consumers are advised this type of scenario is commonly involved in an advance fee fraud.
Any consumer receiving such correspondence is asked to contact the Aviva ombudsman at ombudsman@avivacanada.com and to forward the correspondence to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
