After many years of worsening news and increasing theft rates, there is a refreshing trend reported from the first half of 2025: “Auto theft involving private passenger vehicles in Canada decreased 19.1% in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024,” according to the Équité Association — the organization that helps Canadian insurance companies eradicate insurance fraud and crime.
The positive news is even better in Ontario, where insurers saw a 25.9% decrease of auto thefts in the province, compared to 2024.
The year-over-year raw numbers show there’s still a lot of work to be done, however, as more than 9,000 vehicles in Ontario were stolen in the first six months of the year.

What’s Being Done to Reduce Auto Theft in Ontario?
According to Bryan Gast, Équité’s National Vice President of Investigative Services, the key to reducing auto theft is strong teamwork across various groups. Instead of working independently, federal and provincial government agencies, law enforcement, insurers, and industry partners are joining forces to tackle the issue.
Recent tactics have included:
- A dedicated provincial auto theft task force, led by the Ontario Provincial Police alongside partner police agencies, supported by specialized prosecutors focused on organized crime
- Public Safety Canada’s 2024 National Summit on Combatting Auto Theft, with increased resources from the Canada Border Services Agency, following Équité’s recognition of auto theft as a national crisis in 2023
- Helpful guidance from media outlets and the Staebler Blog, offering practical tips to help people protect their vehicles from theft
More work needs to be done and Gast highlights emerging trends in auto theft, such as the rise of “chop shops,” where stolen vehicles are dismantled and sold for parts, both in Canada and abroad.
Another growing issue is “re-vinning,” where thieves replace a stolen vehicle’s identification number with a fake one to disguise it. Learn more about re-vinning.
What’s Next for Preventing Auto Theft?
Two major initiatives are in progress to further combat auto theft:
- The development of a harmonized Canada-U.S. Standard for Vehicle Theft Deterrent Equipment and Systems, which is awaiting approval from Transport Canada. This would ensure that all new vehicles sold or manufactured in Canada or the U.S. come equipped with advanced security features designed to counter modern theft techniques
- The creation of a national VIN registry to improve information sharing between provincial registries, making it harder for thieves to re-vin stolen vehicles and helping law enforcement track them more effectively
These collaborative and innovative steps aim to make it tougher for thieves and keep vehicles safer for everyone.
