Each year the Équité Association delivers the sobering news that auto theft isn’t going away in Canada any time soon.

However, their most recent report shines a light on some good news for Canadians who are worried about auto theft. Overall, reported thefts declined by about 19 per cent year-over-year. Unfortunately, despite the declining rates, insurance losses still exceeded $1-billion in 2024.

To hone in on which vehicles are being most targeted, here’s our annual David Letterman moment with the top 10 stolen vehicles of 2024:

1. Toyota RAV4 (2,080 stolen; 0.38% theft rate)
2. Dodge Ram 1500 Series (2,018 stolen; 0.39% theft rate)
3. Honda CR-V (1,911 stolen; 0.37% theft rate)
4. Ford F150 Series (1,833 stolen; 0.31% theft rate)
5. Honda Civic (1,797 stolen; 0.26% theft rate)
6. Jeep Wrangler (1,491 stolen; 1.03% theft rate)
7. Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series (1,192 stolen; 0.20% theft rate)
8. Toyota Highlander (1,141 stolen; 0.90% theft rate)
9. Toyota Tundra (1,129 stolen; 1.52% theft rate)
10. Lexus RX Series (1,124 stolen, 1.14% theft rate)

Why is the Toyota RAV4 the Most Stolen Vehicle?

The Toyota RAV4, stolen more than 2,000 times last year, continues to be a highly-targeted vehicle because of its high domestic demand, strong resale value, and easy global movement.

“The Toyota RAV4’s appearance at the top of the list is a clear sign that organized criminal networks are not slowing down; they are simply shifting their tactics,” said Bryan Gast, Équité’s National VP of Investigative Services, told Insurance Business Magazine in November. “We’re seeing a shift towards stolen vehicles being re-VINed for sale or disassembled in illegal chop shops and sold for parts. As the cost to buy and maintain vehicles rises, we can expect to see this trend grow.”

What’s Being Done about Auto Theft in Canada?

Meanwhile, the Équité Association says it’s pushing for preventative measures like mandating the new ULC 338 anti-theft standard and working with Public Safety Canada to sustain momentum under the National Action Plan on Combatting Auto Theft.

It’s our view that this multi-layered issue requires agreement and solid solutions from all levels of government, regulatory associations, the insurance industry, and automakers themselves. Staebler Insurance will continue to advocate for more safeguards and stronger anti-theft tactics.
