Important Reminder Clear Your Roof

While roofs are built to handle some accumulation of snow, it’s important not to let snow or ice build up too much. This winter has seen a significant amount of snow add up since early November.

Accumulation beyond 20 cm can cause damage to the structure and roofing materials, lead to ice dams, obstructed vents, and improper drainage — all of which increases the risk of water seeping in.

Excess snow can also impair the function of control joints and expansion joints designed to help the building materials contract and expand during colder months.

That said, roof snow removal can be a risky task. It poses hazards such as falls from heights, electrocution, and heart attacks.

Be Safe About Removing Snow

To safely remove snow buildup on your roof:

  • Use safe methods: Identify nearby hazards, set up a safe work area, and use proper tools like a long-handled roof rake. Avoid sharp tools or heat that could damage the roof.
  • Stay clear of electrical lines or other wires while removing the snow
  • Be sure to stay on the ground to avoid the risk of falls or potential damage to the roof
  • Tackle small sections at a time. Start near the eavestrough and methodically pull-down small amounts, working your way up to the roof’s peak
  • Remember to clear vents to allow proper airflow
  • Leave some snow: You may not want to go scrape right down to the roof’s surface to prevent damaging the shingles or other roofing materials

Consider Professional Help

Hiring a qualified snow removal professional is the best way to ensure the job is done safely and efficiently. Always ask for proof of insurance coverage to protect your property and your interests.

If snow and ice accumulation is already significant, it may be best to consult a structural engineer to assess the load and prevent potential damage.
