Municipal Speed Camera Program expands in Waterloo Region

Back-to-school time not only brings School Bus safety top of mind, but also School Zone safety. To improve safety around schools, Waterloo Region’s Municipal Speed Camera Program monitors vehicle travel speeds at select locations. The strategy is to create safer environments for walking, rolling, and cycling providing health and environmental benefits for individuals and communities.

Frequently Asked Questions about Speed Cameras in Waterloo Region

  • What are the speed limits in these areas?
    In many of these areas the speed limits have been reduced to between 30 km/h and 40 km/h. Keep an eye out for updated signage.
  • What times of day are the cameras active?
    Speed limits should be observed 24 hours per day, 7 days a week to avoid receiving a ticket.
  • How is the ticket issued?
    Cameras capture the image of the licence plate of a vehicle deemed to be speeding. The images are then reviewed by Provincial Offences Officers and within 30 days a ticket is issued to the owner of the vehicle.
  • What if I was not driving the vehicle?
    Since the camera does not capture an image of the driver, only the vehicle, the owner of the vehicle is responsible for the ticket. The ticket will include the posted speed limit, speed of the vehicle, the location, time of day, and the licence plate of the vehicle.
  • What to do if I get a ticket?
    You have the option to pay the ticket, ask for a resolution by meeting with a prosecutor, or request a trial before a Justice of the Peace. Once the ticket is settled, vehicle owners will not be subject to demerit points.
