Summer is a great time for outdoor fun including backyard fires and barbeques with family and friends. It’s also important to remember that safety comes first when enjoying fires and using/storing propane tanks that fuel both fire tables and barbeques.

Where should propane tanks be stored?

  • Outdoors: Propane tanks should be stored outside in a well-ventilated, dry area, away from direct sunlight and heat sources
  • Shaded Area: Make sure to keep the propane tank in a shaded area to prevent it from overheating
  • Proper Ventilation: Ensure that the store area has proper ventilation to prevent the buildup of flammable gas
  • Store your Tank Upright: Tanks should be stored in an upright position, and they should be secured to prevent it from tipping over
  • Away from Heat: Keep tanks away from fire pits, grills, water heaters, space heaters and other ignition sources

Other Propane Tank Safety Tips

  • Regularly check for leaks by inspecting the connections and valves regularly for leaks using soapy water to test for leaks
  • Check for damage such as dents or rust
  • Always turn off both the propane and appliance valves when finishing using
  • Be prepared for an emergency by having plans in place like know how to shut off the gas supply and contacting emergency services
  • Cooling down your tanks by spraying with cool water from a garden hose when temperatures are extremely high

You can help ensure a safe and enjoyable summer following these safety tips when using propane to enjoy summer activities.
