Becoming a homeowner is exciting, but it comes with a list of serious responsibilities! Here are some essential tips and checklists to help you settle in smoothly. These can also be useful for seasoned homeowners as friendly reminders of important areas of the property to maintain:
New Homeowner Tips
- Change the Locks – Ensure security by replacing locks or rekeying them
- Locate Shut-Off Valves – Know where the inside and outside water, gas and electrical shutoffs are in case of emergencies or service needs
- Inspect and Maintain HVAC – Change air filters regularly and schedule maintenance
- Check Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms – Replace batteries and test alarms
- Create a Home Maintenance Schedule – Regularly inspect the roof, gutters, and plumbing
- Build an Emergency Fund – Unexpected repairs happen, so set aside savings
- Understand Your Home Insurance Policy – Know what’s covered and update if needed. Speak with a licensed insurance broker to be sure you’re properly insured for your unique situation.
- Shop around to save on Mortgage Insurance – you can save up to 50% by securing your own life insurance instead of accepting what is offered by your lender. Every penny counts, and in this case, it pays to shop around
- Meet Your Neighbours – Building good relationships can be helpful for security and community support
