In February, the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario announced the end of licence plate stickers and their associated renewal fees for most personal vehicles. It is seen as a financial break for Ontario car owners who are facing record-high gas prices every time they’re at the pumps.
How do I get my Licence Plate Sticker Refund?
The province says this is an automated process and refund cheques will be mailed out based on the address they have on file associated with your Driver’s Licence. Licence plate sticker refunds are being processed and expected to arrive in vehicle owners’ mailboxes soon.
If you paid renewal fees for your licence plate sticker for any: Individually owned passenger vehicle, light commercial motor vehicle (under 3000 kg), motorcycle, or moped between March 1, 2020 and March 12, 2022, and you do not owe any fees, fines or tolls, you will receive a refund cheque in the mail starting at the end of March and throughout the month of April.
If you updated your address or paid fines, fees or tolls after March 7, 2022, your refund cheque may be delayed and not arrive until the summer or fall. Make sure the address associated with your Drivers Licence is up to date to make sure you receive the refund!
Vehicles Not Eligible for the Licence Plate Sticker Refunds
Not all vehicles on Ontario roads are eligible for the refunds. Here’s a quick list of vehicles that won’t be included:
• Heavy commercial vehicles (over 3000 kg)
• Farm vehicles
• Busses and school busses
• Motorized snow vehicles (snowmobiles)
• Off-road vehicles
• Trailers
Owners of these types of vehicles will still need to pay a fee when renewing their licence plate.
For passenger vehicles, keep in mind that although stickers and fees are no longer required, the licence plate will still need to be renewed every one or two years.
How do I Renew My Licence Plate in Ontario?
Your best bet is to renew online. Ontario.ca has an online form that walks you through the process. Be sure that you have the following information handy:
• your licence plate number
• your vehicle permit number
• your insurance company name and policy number (Click here to download a Digital Pink Slip, containing your policy details)
• your odometer reading
• pay any defaulted fines, tolls or fees
• pay for your renewal fees (if applicable)
• an emissions test, if you are renewing for a heavy-duty diesel vehicle
Your insurance is verified by matching your vehicle identification number (VIN) to your vehicle permit and to your car insurance policy (pink slip). If the VIN on your dashboard and your pink slip do not match, you will need to contact your insurance company to fix it.
