A recent study revealed more than 40% of drivers didn’t know that their vehicle is one of the most frequently stolen in Canada. Experts say that knowing your vehicle is highly targeted can be the first step in protecting yourself from auto theft.

Despite news reports, reminders, and calls-to-action, auto theft in Ontario increased by 31%, compared to the prior year, in the first half of 2023.

According to the Équité Association, the most frequently stolen vehicles in Canada are:

  • Honda CR-V
  • Dodge RAM 1500 Series
  • Ford F-150 Series
  • Lexus RX Series
  • Toyota Highlander

Rounding out the top 10 stolen vehicles: Honda Civic, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Land Rover Range Rover, Chevrolet/GMC Silverado/Sierra 1500 Series, and Jeep Wrangler.

Low Chance of Recovery if Stolen

Another surprising figure is that the likelihood of a stolen vehicle in Ontario being recovered is less than 50%. Experts are reminding drivers that the best defence is to take frontline action so your vehicle doesn’t become a part of this growing statistic.

How to Reduce the Risk of Your Vehicle Being Stolen

Here are some suggested actions to take now to help reduce the risk of your vehicle being stolen:

  • Park in a secured garage
  • Store your key fob in a RFID-blocking pouch (eg. Faraday bag) to prevent the signal from being intercepted
  • Use steering wheel, ignition, and/or pedal locks
  • Install an aftermarket immobilizer that protects against relay attacks
  • Install a GPS tracking device
