Own a home? You should have a Homeowner’s Policy which also covers:
Outdoor Equipment
The building itself, including any outdoor swimming pools and attached equipment. This also includes outdoor trees, shrubs and plants.
Other Structures
Detached garages, sheds, or outbuildings.
Condo Insurance
Own a condo? You should have a Condominium Policy which also covers:
Upgrades
Any upgrades to your condo, things like counter tops or cabinets that you couldn’t take with you if you left.
Condo Corp
The condo corporation is responsible for insuring the building itself, but if their insurance is inadequate each condo unit owner can be asked to kick in. You have an allowance just in case.
Common Areas
The condo corporation could also ask you to pay a share of any repair costs for common areas which your insurance would cover.
Tenant Insurance
Renters: There is no coverage for the building itself because your landlord insures that.
