New Fireworks Bylaws Kitchener Waterloo

The cities of Kitchener and Waterloo took a major step towards reducing the number of disruptions and complaints from fireworks – by banning their sales beginning in 2026.

Previously the Staebler Blog wrote about Backyard Fire and Fireworks Bylaws in Waterloo Region. Fast forward to May 2025 when councillors in both Kitchener and Waterloo made the significant move by banning the sale of fireworks (via CTV Kitchener) and reducing the number of permitted days.

When can Fireworks be used in Kitchener and Waterloo?

As noted, the cities not only banned the sale of fireworks, but also reduced the permitted dates and times when fireworks may be used.  The cities both cut back on the total number of days and consolidated the permitted dates on which fireworks may be set off.

Beginning this year (2025), the updated dates and times allowing for fireworks are:

  • Victoria Day (9 p.m. to 11 p.m.)
  • Canada Day (9 p.m. to 11 p.m.)
  • Diwali (8 p.m. to 10 p.m.)

Further dissuading the use of fireworks, fines for violating these bylaws have also significantly increased. The new penalties for fireworks-related infractions are now between $1,000 and $1,500.

City councils agreed that new restrictions were needed after increased complaints by residents and the improper and sometimes dangerous use of fireworks. One councillor noted they don’t want to prevent people from having fun but want to ensure the proper and responsible use of fireworks during appropriate times of celebration.

Similarly, other cities in Ontario that have banned the sale of fireworks (Waterloo Region Record) include Brampton, Milton, and Woodstock.
