Summer is finally here, bringing longer days, warmer weather, and an undeniable urge to break out the wallet. From spontaneous road trips to ice cream runs, the sunny season is notorious for making money melt away. In fact, studies show that over 52% of consumers overspend during the summer months. Beware: don’t let the sunny weather scorch your finances!
Fortunately, staying financially healthy doesn’t mean sacrificing your summer fun. Embracing a mindset of “wise frugality” allows you to maximize your enjoyment without the autumn financial hangover.
Build a “Sun and Sand” Budget
A great summer budget focuses on intentional allocation rather than total deprivation.
- Define your non-negotiables. Decide if you prioritize a major vacation or local weekend activities.
- Don’t forget about seasonal spikes in your regular budget! Account for higher utility bills from air conditioning, and generally higher summer gas prices, before spending all your extra money on summer fun.
- Try automating your savings and moving your savings to a separate account before vacation season peaks.
Rethink Travel and Leisure
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the season — without massive price tags.
- Explore domestic travel. Why not opt for road trips and camping instead of costly flights?
- Schedule “off” weekends. Intentionally leave weekends free to rest and save money, hang out with friends or visit a beach or pool for less expensive fun.
- Swap restaurants for picnics. Gather friends at home or local parks for affordable, communal dining.
How to Curb Impulse Purchases
It’s a fact: warm weather naturally triggers spontaneous spending.
- Avoid promotional traps. One idea is to set up a separate email address for retail store newsletters. That way, you aren’t overly tempted when you are checking your regular email!
- Utilize your local library. Rent summer beach reads and digital audiobooks entirely for free.
- Try the ’48 hour’ rule: take a pause before committing to an expensive vacation or before purchasing any ‘non-essential’ summer gear or clothing. Then see if it’s still a good spend
Small Spending, Big Joy
If you want to spend money, consider investing in others! Research indicates that spending even a tiny amount on someone else provides a much larger, longer-lasting ‘happiness boost’ than spending it on yourself. Think about buying a $5 ice cream for a friend or neighbor — it can instantly elevate your summer vibe!
We hope you enjoy the sunshine, make many summer memories AND keep your bank account ‘in check’ this summer!
