October is Cyber Security Awareness Month an important annual reminder that your organization’s first and best defence against a cyberattack isn’t just technology, it’s your employees and the actions they take every day.
Cyber Month is an international campaign held every October to create more public awareness around the importance of cyber security. Get Cyber Safe, through the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSE), is the Canadian-led campaign for Cyber Month.
In a world with more sophisticated artificial intelligence (AI) adoption, cyberthreats can look more convincing than ever.
Tactics such as phishing emails may closely imitate a trusted supplier, colleague, or executive. Vishing, or voice phishing, can use urgent phone calls or even AI-generated voices to pressure employees into sharing information, transferring funds, or bypassing normal procedures.
Your Employees are Your Best Defence
For employers, the positive news is cybersecurity doesn’t have to be overly complicated, especially for your frontend staff.
Get Cyber Safe has chosen the theme for Cyber Month 2026 as “Your best defence is you,” and a few simple habits can make a meaningful difference.
It’s important that employees develop cybersecure practices at work, such as:
- Use a long password or passphrase
- Create unique passwords for every account
- Enable multi-factor authentication to access systems and accounts
- Pause before responding to unusual requests
- Verify suspicious messages using an alternative, trusted contact method
- Report anything suspicious or unusual
Regular and updated training helps staff recognize how scams are changing.
Having clear internal processes are important too, as employees should know who to contact and how to report a suspected incident. A quick report can help contain an attack before it spreads, reducing disruption, costs, and reputational damage.
Why You Still Need Cyber Insurance
Even with strong precautions, no organization is immune. Cyber insurance helps address non-physical business interruption, breach response costs, and regulatory defence, as well as security and privacy liability. Depending on the policy, coverage may also respond to cyber extortion, payment card exposure, multimedia liability, and reputational harm.
