HEADS UP: Automatic Ontario Licence Plate Renewals begin on July 1

Ontario drivers are being reminded to ensure their licence plate is renewed before July 1, 2024 or face a $110 fine.

That’s because the province is converting to automatic plate renewals, meaning if your vehicle is properly insured and you have no fines or outstanding tolls, your plate will be automatically renewed.

It’s another win for drivers who no longer have to pay for licence plate registration and previously received renewal refunds in 2022.

Ontario Police are Catching Expired Licence Plates

However, since the announcement in 2022, thousands of plates have gone unregistered as drivers thought they no longer needed to renew. The continued warning from Ontario police is that your licence plate needs to be registered and renewed ahead of Canada Day, or you could receive a ticket.

Last year, the Staebler Blog shared that Automatic Licence Plate Readers (ALPRs) have made it easy for police to detect expired, suspended, and/or unregistered licence plates on the road.  Be sure to double check that your licence plate is registered and in good standing prior to July 1 to ensure that you’re not potentially stopped by police and fined.

STAEBLER TIP: To avoid a ticket, check to ensure your licence plate is up to date and eligible for automatic renewal as soon as possible. You can easily do so online if you have your licence plate number and vehicle permit number: Renew your licence plate | ontario.ca
