Breaking News: Provincial Recovery Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KITCHENER, ON (April 1, 2026)  — Government of Ontario officials were at Staebler Insurance in downtown Kitchener today to announce the creation of a brand-new proposed statutory holiday to be observed across the province on April 2, 2026.

The holiday is being referred to as “Provincial Recovery Day” and is designed to give residents a well‑deserved opportunity to rest, recuperate, and emotionally reset after enduring the annual onslaught of Staebler’s pretty lame April Fools’ Day jokes, which are normally released each year on April 1.

Recognizing that April Fools’ Day has grown into a phenomenon that can include harmless pranks and elaborate hoaxes — from a new species of owl to an ‘S’ imprint discovered on the moon — officials noted that many who observed the April Fools’ Day jokes experienced elevated levels of eye-rolling, involuntary groaning, and prank-related fatigue. The new holiday aims to provide relief and recovery for these symptoms.

“April Fools’ Day has long been part of Staebler’s culture, but the creativity, and occasionally the chaos, of modern pranks has reached new heights,” said a government spokesperson. “Ontarians deserve a day to catch their breath, reconnect with reality, and enjoy a moment of peace after navigating the unpredictable challenges of April 1.”

National Recovery Day will be recognized as a statutory holiday for provincial employees, with private-sector workplaces planning to observe the holiday as well. Schools, government offices, and public institutions will also be closed for the day.

In addition to offering a moment of calm, officials hope the holiday will foster a sense of unity, community spirit, and collective resilience.

“April 2 is a chance for everyone to share their stories, laugh together, and reflect on what they’ve endured and, ultimately, survived,” the spokesperson added. “We believe this new holiday will quickly become one of Ontario’s most beloved traditions.”

More details about the holiday and guidelines will be released shortly. But for now, be prepared to go to school or work tomorrow as the timeline for the rollout of this new holiday is still being finalized.
