Police Alert: Airbags are being Stolen from a Popular Model of Car

The Guelph Police Service has issued an alert after at least 10 airbags were stolen out of vehicles over the past weekend.

Police are saying that Honda Civics were specifically targeted, in and around apartment buildings in Guelph, Ontario. In all cases, Civics involved were from the model years between 2016 and 2021. The driver’s door handle was drilled out to gain entry and the airbag was removed with another tool.

Joanna Mendonca, President of Staebler Insurance, told CTV Kitchener that targeting a common vehicle could make it easier to sell the stolen part.

“Something like a Honda Civic could be a very common model of vehicle, and may be a bit of an extra target for thieves for that reason.”

These thefts not only result in financial loss for the victims but have also caused significant inconvenience due to the time and effort required for repairs. A sudden spike in demand for replacement airbags could also lead to a shortage of parts, further complicating the situation for affected car owners.

Joanna noted that airbags can cost up to $2,000 to replace: “It’s something we would consider a high-value part. There can also be integral systems built into the airbag that can be affected by its removal. So it can be a costly replacement.”

Another danger of stolen airbags is if drivers are not aware that their airbag is missing until after an accident.

In response to these thefts, Staebler Insurance is urging car owners to take proactive measures to help protect their vehicles:

  • Keep your vehicle locked at all times
  • Park in well-lit areas, preferably in a locked garage
  • Park near or install security cameras at home
  • Add an anti-theft device such as steering wheel lock (can help prevent access to the airbag in some cars and provides a visual deterrent)
  • Only use reputable garages for work or repairs to your vehicle

If your airbag is stolen:

  1. Report the theft to police immediately
  2. Contact your insurance broker about a potential claim

Additionally, community vigilance and reporting suspicious activities to the police are crucial in deterring further incidents. Anyone with information is being asked to contact Guelph Police or Crime Stoppers.
