Ontario Storm: Rainfall Claims and Basement Flooding Subsidies

Rapid rainfall over a short period last week led to disastrous conditions and flooding in many parts of southern Ontario, including Waterloo Region and the Greater Toronto Area.

Insurance Claim Responses are Delayed

In response, insurance companies have received thousands of emergency calls and new claims.

Many insurers are experiencing delayed response times. Initial contact may be two days or more, and once a vendor is assigned, it may be another two business days to set expectations regarding emergency repairs and being able to attend the site.

The industry recognizes that large-scale events such as this are challenging for clients but please know that everyone continues to work as quickly and as efficiently as possible to make things right.

According to Canadian Underwriter, the industry will likely surpass $1 billion in losses after more than 100 mm of rain fell on July 16. That’s more than an average month’s worth of rail in just a few hours.

If you’re experiencing a water situation, your Staebler Broker is available to answer any questions you may have and remains your advocate during a claim. Please feel free to reach out with an email or phone call at any time.

Flood Mitigation Subsidies Available

In Toronto, for example, owners of a single-family, duplex, triplex or fourplex residential homes can apply for a subsidy of up to $3,400 per property to install flood protection devices. These include backwater valves, sump pump, capping of a home’s storm sewer or external weeping tile connection. Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program – City of Toronto

Meanwhile, the Region of Peel has a sanitary backwater valve rebate of $700 for eligible homeowners. This helps reduce the threat of basement flooding due to rainfall. Learn more from the Region of Peel: Peel’s wastewater by-law (peelregion.ca)

Halton Region has a Flooding Prevention Subsidy Program that covers a number of scenarios to help mitigate basement flooding. These include downspout disconnections and sump pump installation. The subsidies can range from $500-$5,000 depending on the project and homeowner’s eligibility: Halton – Enhanced Basement Flooding Prevention Subsidy Program

While Waterloo Region doesn’t have subsidies for flooding mitigation, there are a number of water saving programs for residents, including a free home water review. Learn more here: Reducing water use at home – Region of Waterloo

Flood Coverage for Homeowners

Overland water/flood coverage hasn’t always been available for homeowners, and as it is an optional coverage, many policyholders may still not have the coverage. Connect with a Staebler Insurance Broker to learn more about the options available to help protect your property.
