Once autumn arrives, Waterloo Region comes alive with colourful landscapes, seasonal festivals, and family-friendly experiences. Here are five of the best fall activities to enjoy for families, couples, and visitors alike.
1. Experience Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest
You can’t let fall pass without checking out the festival that KW is known for! Canada’s largest Bavarian festival returns from Sept. 25 to Oct. 17, 2026, featuring traditional German food, live entertainment, family activities, parades, festhallen, and community celebrations throughout Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge, including an all new location in the Gaslight District this year! Many events are family-friendly, including the Oktoberfest Family Treasure Hunt and the free outdoor Willkommen Platz festival in downtown Kitchener.

2. Spend a Fall Morning at St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market
A fall visit to the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market is a Waterloo Region tradition. Browse hundreds of vendors offering fresh apples, pumpkins, baked goods, handmade crafts, and seasonal treats. The market operates year-round and is especially vibrant during harvest season. Nearby village shops and walking trails make it easy to turn a market trip into a full day adventure, or check out some of the other events happening this fall throughout the town of St. Jacobs on their events calendar.

3. Explore the Autumn Colours on a Nature Trail
For those looking to enjoy the spectacular fall colours, few places compare to the Rare Charitable Research Reserve in Cambridge. With over 12 kilometres of trails winding through forests, meadows, riverfront landscapes, and rare ecological habitats, it’s one of the region’s best destinations for a peaceful autumn walk. Trails are open from dawn to dusk and free to the public. Visitors can enjoy birdwatching, photography, wildlife viewing, and scenic views along the Grand River while experiencing some of the area’s most significant natural landscapes.
The City of Kitchener also offers free Guided Nature Walks along various community trails and offers time to enjoy sights and sounds, take photos, and enjoy the surroundings of nature along local routes. 4. Visit a Local Pumpkin Patch or Fall Farm
Fall, apple picking, and pumpkin patches go hand in hand. Popular Waterloo Region destinations such as Benjamin Tree Farm, Fall Harvest Farm, Downey’s Apple Farm, and Snyder’s Farm offer pumpkin picking, corn mazes, wagon rides, playgrounds, farm markets, and seasonal treats throughout late September and October. These attractions provide classic autumn experiences and are ideal for family photos, outdoor play, and enjoying the countryside during peak fall colour season. 5. Step Back in History
Celebrate spooky season by stepping back in history through one of the many events run by our local museums. Spanning Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge across all four museums, there is plenty of opportunities to experience the fascinating history of the area. Between historical walking tours, candle-lit evenings in a haunted house, and seasonal Tea by the Grand, there is something for everyone this fall season.
