Education and lifelong learning are major pillars for Staebler Insurance, so it is a great honour to provide a $100,000 gift to the University of Waterloo’s Library for its Open Education Resource (OER) Fellows Grant.

Open education resources are teaching, learning, and resource materials that are free to use and re-purpose, granting more students affordable access to quality education materials. During the next five years of the Staebler Insurance OER Fellows Grant, course instructors can apply for a $5,000 grant to assist them in making OERs available to their students.

Recently, the University of Waterloo released their 2022-2023 Report on Giving and highlighted Staebler’s support of accessible education: Celebrating 150 Years by Supporting Accessible Education

“We are honoured to provide this gift to the library in support of their OER Fellows Grant initiative,” said Joanna Mendonca, President of Staebler Insurance. “This contribution toward open educational resources is our humble contribution toward reducing material costs for students and supporting instructors in the creation of course-tailored resources.”

Instructors and faculty often don’t have the time or support needed to create OERs for their courses. The University says the Staebler Insurance OER Fellows Grant provides the funding for them to do both, allowing wider access to these materials.

In addition to the Staebler Insurance OER Fellows Grant, a study room in the Davis Centre Library has been renamed in honour of Staebler Insurance.
