How to Renew your Licence Plate in Ontario

The province of Ontario has shifted to a no fee licence plate sticker program and issued refunds for those that had paid in the past. To avoid any confusion, yes, you still need to renew your licence plate once a year, or once every two years (the choice is yours!).

Your best option is to renew online every two years. In most cases you don’t need to visit a Service Ontario location, as Ontario.ca has an online form that walks you through the entire process.

PRO TIP: You can sign up for digital reminders so you don’t miss when your Ontario licence plate, driver’s licence, or health card expires: Get ServiceOntario renewal reminders

Before you begin, be sure that you have the following information handy:
 • Your licence plate number
 • Your vehicle permit number
 • Your insurance company name and policy number (Click here to download a Digital Pink Slip, containing your policy details)
 • Your current odometer reading
 • Pay any defaulted fines, tolls or fees
 • Pay for your renewal fees (not applicable to passenger vehicles, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and mopeds)
 • An emissions test pass, if you are renewing for a heavy-duty diesel vehicle
.
Your insurance is verified by matching your vehicle identification number (VIN) to your vehicle permit, and then to your car insurance policy (pink slip). If the VIN on your dashboard and your pink slip do not match, you will need to contact your insurance company to fix it.

If you need any help with this process, or to ensure that your VIN matches on your vehicle permit and your proof of insurance, please contact your Staebler Broker.
