Childhood accidents do happen – it is a part of growing, adventuring, and exploring.

As our children head back to school, here is important information about the high incidence and costs of childhood injuries and some solutions to consider.

Did you know that each year over 1.5 million school-aged children sustain injuries?

Statistics from Ontario Public Health (2019) show that in many cases, our children are just as likely to injure themselves playing, through accidents or at home, as they are while playing sports.

Some injuries incur medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by Provincial health care or employer group plans. These unplanned costs can be a real financial burden for families.

Did you know that the Ontario Education Act has changed, and no long provides for financial recourse regarding student injuries on school property?

Additionally, the Ontario provincial health care system does not cover costs which are commonly related to accidents including emergency dental work, ambulance fees, certain types of casts, crutches, and physiotherapy.

What about your work coverage?
Employee health plans will often not cover all of these costs either, leaving your family to bear the costs not covered.

There are a variety of solutions to protect your family finances from the unexpected costs of childhood injuries. Products such as Insuremykids® Student Accident Insurance offered by Staebler Insurance has plans with a variety of benefits at very affordable prices .

For example, plans start as low as $17 per year. Coverage is not just for school hours too – your child is insured for accidents 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

According to Insurer Old Republic, fracture, dislocations, medical devices (crutches, splints, and braces), emergency dental and physiotherapy comprise 83% of all claims incurred over the past 5 years.

It is worth asking your child’s school if protection plans like the Insuremykids® Student Accident Insurance or similar are available and what they cover, to protect your family and your budget.
